Jiu-Jitsu has planted its roots in many peoples hearts. From those just starting pre-school to those dropping their great grand kids off at school.
For those of us that follow Jiu-Jitsu on social media, we are used to seeing athletes in their prime competing in large tournaments. The truth is, thats only a tiny portion of what Jiu-Jitsu really is.
I’ve noticed more and more people referring to Jiu-Jitsu itself as a sport.
“I love this sport” or “This sport has become a huge part of my life”. These are noble statements, yet they fall very short of what Jiu-Jitsu really is.
I like to describe Jiu-Jitsu as a big umbrella, and underneath that umbrella you have all the things that it provides.
Confidence
Exercise
Self Defense
Hobby
Sport
Friends/Community
Enjoyment
Discipline
And in its entirety a lifestyle.

We must remember that everyone has come onto the mat for a different reason. Many of those reasons are listed above, and no particular one is better than the other.
We may have the older man who wants to enjoy Jiu-Jitsu as a hobby. We could have the young lady learning Jiu-Jitsu for self defense.  Maybe a kiddo in the youth program is there for discipline. These are just a couple of the infinite variations that would motivate someone to learn Jiu-Jitsu.

The truth is many people may think Jiu-Jitsu isn’t for them. They may feel they aren’t flexible, that they need to lose weight or they aren’t athletic enough. But if you find just one of those things under the umbrellla applying to you, you’ll realize that Jiu-Jitsu is so much more than it it appears to be. You’ll realize that Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone!
