Understanding Jiu-Jitsu is a very simple concept, yet extremely difficult to completely accomplish.

If I had to summarize understanding Jiu-Jitsu I would put it as: Knowing what to do in any given grappling situation.  Understanding your options, and understanding your opponents options.
Understanding the proper direction to move into, after having calculated your opponents strengths and weakness, and also your own.
Understanding multiple steps ahead, and what that may lead to.
Understand why each technique is performed and not just how.

I briefly hinted on this earlier in the week, but understanding why we train is the most important question in Jiu-Jitsu. Because it will give us direction in how we train! We all will train for different reasons and for efficiency reasons that will take us down different paths and types of training. As a Jiu-Jitsu instructor its my job to take your why and make a how. The how is a pathway that connects you to your why!
